When a woman’s special friend visits or her period comes, it doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy your partner in the sexual sense. Many are under this preconceived notion that a period means absolutely no sex whatsoever. Some would be disgusted at the thought of someone even having sex on their period in earlier days, but nowadays, it’s more of a normal and acceptable thing. So, is it wrong to have period sex? Our insight might actually shock you.

So picture this scenario in case you haven’t already found yourself personally in it. You and your mate are fooling around, but she shuts down all of your hopes of having a wild steamy night of sex by saying she’s on her period. Your first thought might be to back off and wait until her little friend has left. However, you’re already in the mood and need to let out some steam, and the only way you can do that at this point is through sex. So you get thinking that period sex may not be that bad after all. You’ve never done it before, so you’re not really sure how to approach your lover with this, but you’re sure after a bit of convincing on your end that she will go for it. So you bring the proposition to her, but she’s unsure of the risks involved and if it will even feel good and be worth the effort.

If you or your partner suffer from menstrual cramps as most women do, you’ll find that having sex might actually take some of the pain away. When you have an orgasm, your body is actually releasing endorphins that make you feel good both physically and mentally. Women usually go through not so fun mood swings and cramps during their period, so having sex during a woman’s period can actually be used as a pain reliever. It may not work on everyone, but there is absolutely no harm in trying.

Some women actively practice period sex because some report that they are more aroused when they are on their period. Having sex during it is really the icing on the cake and makes things even better. Just because you might think the idea of having period sex grosses out your partner doesn’t necessarily make it true. Some men have reported that they wouldn’t have a problem with having period sex if their partner was up for it. It seems that in most cases, men just weren’t sure how to approach their mate to see if they would actually be up for having sex while on their period.

Another good point of having period sex is that there’s no need for lubrication. Some women need an extra boost during sex to make sure things are good to go. Women on their period are already producing some natural lubrication of their own, so there really is no need for any other lubricant that you would purchase online or in a store. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with using a bit more lubricant if you feel the need to, but period sex pretty much covers the need to use anything extra.

Contrary to what some may think, period sex does not exempt you from the risk of catching STDs. It’s still important to remember to practice safe sex during your period. Condoms are your best friend, of course. You can actually get pregnant or get someone else pregnant during period sex because ovulation days can overlap. However, if you’re taking birth control, the risk of pregnancy lowers significantly. So it is important to stay safe.

Both men and women need to understand that the risk is greater of catching infections during period sex. Women are more prone to yeast infections and urinary tract infections because of the release of blood during the menstrual cycle. If a woman were to show any signs of either infection, it’s best to seek medical attention right away before more problems arise. Men need to be careful when it comes to using protection during period sex so they won’t catch any sexually transmitted diseases, as we’ve already discussed.

Maybe you’re thinking that period blood is actually some different disgusting blood that you shouldn’t even think of being near. In fact, period blood is no different than any other bodily fluid. If you’re afraid that you might make a mess of things in the bedroom or any other area you enjoy having sex in, make sure to put down a towel or something that will be easy to clean up afterwards. Now, if you’re really not into lying on a bed and be so up close and personal with period blood, then maybe try having sex in the shower. Not only will you be able to quench your sexual thirst, but you also will be able to get clean right afterwards.

What about oral sex during a period? We knew you would ask, so here it is. There’s nothing unhealthy about giving oral sex while your partner is on her period. You won’t receive any bad side effects or anything of that nature. If you don’t really want to experience the complete taste of it all, the dental dam may help soothe things over.

Now that you’ve read through everything and took a good look at our insight on things, is it wrong to have period sex? We say not at all. Research shows that it’s no different from having regular sex. The risks health-wise are still there in both scenarios, so it’s always best to stay protected. Whether period sex is the best thing for you and your partner is something you would have to discuss between you two. Getting things messy is usually the main issue with period sex, so make sure to have enough towels. A menstrual cup can also help reduce the amount of blood that comes out during the act for easier cleanup. There are options if you really are interested in period sex.
